Antica Barbieria Colla
Antica Barbieria Colla has been Milan's barbershop since 1904, still run today by the Bompieri family.
Most beard waxes are concerned with appearance - softness, shine, hold. This one attends to those things. It also protects.
The base is rice bran oil and shea butter; corn starch and hydrolysed wheat protein complete the formula. Applied by warming a small amount in the hands and working it through the beard with fingertips, it leaves the hair soft and polished. In cold weather, the wax forms a barrier that prevents wind from cracking the skin beneath. In summer, applied regularly to brown beards, it slows the process by which sun, wind, and salt water gradually turn the colour reddish.
The formula may develop microspheres in cold conditions - a natural response to temperature change, not a defect. Warm it briefly in the hands before use.

Use
Take a small amount from the jar and warm it between the palms until it softens. Work it through the beard by pinching sections of hair between the fingertips rather than smoothing it through - this distributes the wax evenly without flattening the beard.
About the barbershop
Antica Barbieria Colla has been on Via Gerolamo Morone in Milan since 1944 - and in the city, without interruption, since 1904. Dino Colla opened the original barbieria near the Duomo that year, modelled on the private gentlemen's clubs of London. The house survived two addresses and a wartime bombing; Francesca Bompieri, whose father Franco ran it from 1975, runs it today. The product line - hair, skin, beard, shaving, and four signature colognes - traces its formulations to Colla himself, each recipe passed down and quietly refined through the generations of ownership that followed. Everything is hand-made in Italy by specialists who work in direct contact with the house.
