About the workshop
A few steps off Corso Lodi in Milan, a stationery and print shop has been open since 1909. Costante and Luigia Bonvini founded it as the neighbourhood's place for paper and ink. More than a century later, the original presses still run.
In 2014, a group of friends rescued the shop from disappearing, restoring it with architects who specialise in cultural heritage. The machines - a 19th-century platen press, an Imperial Cylinder Press, a Heidelberg Stella - were returned to working order.
Bonvini 1909 is now part print shop, part gallery, part cultural institution. Every piece carries the particular character that only a hand-fed press can produce - the slight variation, the impression in the paper, the evidence of a human hand.
$15 flat shipping, Australia-wide — free over $300.
Cabaret Typographie is a letterpress collective founded in Milan and Paris in 2010 by Laura Dal Maso, Mauro De Toffol and Tommaso Pucci, printing everything by hand from their Milan residency at Atelier Bonvini 1909 since 2022.
Three layers of Paris, pulled into one print.
The facade of the Maison Deneux on rue Belliard, its ceramics made by Gentil et Bourdet in 1913. The geometric triangle pattern Auguste Perret used on the Palais d'Iéna, designed for the Universal Exhibition of 1937. And the Bifur typeface - drawn by Cassandre in 1929 for the Parisian foundry Deberny et Peignot, one of the great Art Deco letterforms.
Paris! is Cabaret Typographie's screenprint portrait of a city assembled from its own surfaces. Twenty signed and numbered copies on 250gsm Materica Gesso at 50 × 70 cm, made at their atelier inside Bonvini 1909 on Via Tagliamento, Milan.
Exclusive to Australia.
