About the workshop
A few steps off Corso Lodi in Milan, a stationery and print shop has been open since 1909. Costante and Luigia Bonvini founded it as the neighbourhood's place for paper and ink. More than a century later, the original presses still run.
In 2014, a group of friends rescued the shop from disappearing, restoring it with architects who specialise in cultural heritage. The machines - a 19th-century platen press, an Imperial Cylinder Press, a Heidelberg Stella - were returned to working order.
Bonvini 1909 is now part print shop, part gallery, part cultural institution. Every piece carries the particular character that only a hand-fed press can produce - the slight variation, the impression in the paper, the evidence of a human hand.
$15 flat shipping, Australia-wide — free over $300.
Cabaret Typographie is a letterpress collective founded in Milan and Paris in 2010 by Laura Dal Maso, Mauro De Toffol and Tommaso Pucci, printing everything by hand from their Milan residency at Atelier Bonvini 1909 since 2022.
Beneath Piazza Oberdan in Milan, there is a day hotel that most people have walked over without knowing it exists. Piero Portaluppi designed it in the 1920s - a place where travellers could wash, rest, and have their shoes shined without renting a room - and filled it with decorations that have been quietly fading ever since it closed in the 1990s. The Albergo Diurno Venezia is one of those spaces that rewards people who find it.
Love is Cabaret Typographie's homage to Portaluppi's decorative language. Printed in three colours from laser-cut MDF matrices on 250gsm Materica Gesso at 50 × 70 cm, it is one of twenty-five signed and numbered copies, made at their atelier inside Bonvini 1909 on Via Tagliamento.
Exclusive to Australia.
