Đăng lamp medium
Hanoia
The Đăng range is made by Hanoia, in northern Vietnam - a house dedicated to sơn mài, the country's traditional lacquer craft, applied here in successive coats over a slender cylindrical form. Each lamp is hand-sanded between layers; the sanding is what gives lacquer its depth, the slow translucence the technique is known for.
Lacquer from Hanoi. Hand-built. Hand-sanded.

About the workshop
Lacquer is not paint. It is built - layer by layer, sanded back, built again - a process that can run for months before a piece is finished. Hanoia was founded in Hanoi in 1997 by artists who spent years producing lacquerware for the world's great luxury houses, anonymously, before stepping forward under their own name. That apprenticeship shows. The work is immaculate.
Their artisans live and work in Vietnam's traditional lacquer villages, carrying techniques passed down through generations and refining them with each piece. Eggshell inlay. Gold leaf gilding. Hand engraving. Nothing is rushed because nothing can be. The object tells you so.
