About Bridie Hall
Bridie Hall grew up in New Zealand and has lived in London for twenty years, working as a decorative artist and maker whose eye keeps returning to antiquity - country houses, garden ornament, zoological forms, classical typography. In 2008 she and the designer Ben Pentreath opened a shop together at 17 Rugby Street in London; by 2013 it had become Pentreath & Hall, and she still divides her time between running it and making the objects that carry her own name.
Her own words for what she makes: things that feel as though they were carried home from a Grand Tour she never took. A plaster bust of a Roman emperor. Soap cast from an intaglio seal. Paper trays that fold flat and open printed, on the inside, with an eighteenth-century engraving. Each object borrows a fragment of something old and specific - an engraving, a coin, a piece of antique marble - and rebuilds it at a scale you can actually live with.
Some pieces are made entirely in her own London workshop; others are produced in collaboration with small studios she chooses for a particular skill - paper engineering, marbling, casting - always to her own designs. What holds the range together isn't a single material or process, but a consistent way of looking: an antiques dealer's eye for the fragment worth keeping, turned into things made new.
