Cesare Lacca - Folding Magazine Rack, c 1950
Cesare Lacca - Folding Magazine Rack, c 1950
Vintage
Cesare Lacca was born in Naples in 1929 and was working as a designer of furniture and metalwork before he turned twenty-one - young enough that his pieces were selected for "Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today," the exhibition that carried postwar Italian design across twelve American museums between 1950 and 1953.
Folded open, this magazine rack reads almost as a single gesture - a tall, tapering spine of dark stained rod that splits at the base into three splayed feet, then closes flat for storage. Nothing about it needs upholstery or a case to hold its shape; the rod-and-brass frame is the whole design, in the spirit of Lacca's furniture of the 1950s.
Material: dark stained wood rod with brass fittings, folding frame
