About the workshop
A few steps off Corso Lodi in Milan, a stationery and print shop has been open since 1909. Costante and Luigia Bonvini founded it as the neighbourhood's place for paper and ink. More than a century later, the original presses still run.
In 2014, a group of friends rescued the shop from disappearing, restoring it with architects who specialise in cultural heritage. The machines - a 19th-century platen press, an Imperial Cylinder Press, a Heidelberg Stella - were returned to working order.
Bonvini 1909 is now part print shop, part gallery, part cultural institution. Every piece carries the particular character that only a hand-fed press can produce - the slight variation, the impression in the paper, the evidence of a human hand.
$15 flat shipping, Australia-wide — free over $300.
Cabaret Typographie is a letterpress collective founded in Milan and Paris in 2010 by Laura Dal Maso, Mauro De Toffol and Tommaso Pucci, printing everything by hand from their Milan residency at Atelier Bonvini 1909 since 2022.
In the early 1960s, a group of young British architects began publishing a magazine from a kitchen table in London - more like a comic book than an architectural journal, full of inflatable cities, plug-in towers, and walking urban machines. Archigram never built much. What they built was an imagination.
ARCHITYPE is Cabaret Typographie's homage to that moment. Printed by Tipoteca Italiana in three colours from laser-cut MDF matrices, on 250gsm Gmund Bauhaus Weiss, it arrives as a letterpress poster at 50 × 70 cm. The collective has spent fifteen years making work like this: type as argument, as spectacle, as structure.
Thirty copies. Signed and numbered.
Exclusive to Australia.
