Antica Barbieria Colla has been Milan's barbershop since 1904, still run today by the Bompieri family.

Most aftershaves announce themselves with a sting - the alcohol that closes pores and disinfects, at the cost of the sharp sensation that follows a blade. This one contains none. Apricot hull oil - extracted from the stone of the fruit, dense with vitamins and essential fatty acids - does the calming work instead, without the burn. The face is left smooth and cool; peppermint oil and eucalyptus provide the freshness that alcohol usually claims.

A client at Via Gerolamo Morone used to buy ten bottles at a time, nervous about running short. Eventually he mentioned why: his wife and daughters had started using it as an after-sun lotion each summer. He had to share.

100ml. In a glass bottle. Hand-made in Italy.

Ingredients

Aqua [Water], Cetearyl ethylhexanoate, Ethylhexyl palmitate, Cetearyl alcohol, Glycerin, Ceteareth-25, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Butyrospermum parkii butter [Butyrospermum parkii (Shea) butter], Prunus amygdalus dulcis oil [Prunus amygdalus dulcis (Sweet almond) oil], Triticum vulgare germ oil [Triticum vulgare (Wheat) germ oil], Cetyl alcohol, Prunus armeniaca fruit extract [Prunus armeniaca (Apricot) fruit extract], Hamamelis virginiana leaf water [Hamamelis virginiana (Witch hazel) leaf water], Mentha piperita leaf extract [Mentha piperita (Peppermint) leaf extract], Mentha piperita oil [Mentha piperita (Peppermint) oil], Eucalyptus globulus oil [Eucalyptus globulus leaf oil], Menthol, Hydrolyzed wheat protein, Propylene glycol, Parfum [Fragrance], Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium dehydroacetate, Benzaldehyde, Limonene, Pinene.

Use

Pour a small amount into the palm, rub between both hands and massage into freshly shaved skin. The formula is thick, so allow time for it to absorb - the skin will benefit from a longer massage than you might expect. If you are using a warm cloth as part of your shaving ritual, you can apply the aftershave either before or after: before the cloth, the warmth will help open the pores and draw the emulsion in; after the cloth, use slightly less and massage until fully absorbed.

About the barbershop

Antica Barbieria Colla has been on Via Gerolamo Morone in Milan since 1944 - and in the city, without interruption, since 1904. Dino Colla opened the original barbieria near the Duomo that year, modelled on the private gentlemen's clubs of London. The house survived two addresses and a wartime bombing; Francesca Bompieri, whose father Franco ran it from 1975, runs it today. The product line - hair, skin, beard, shaving, and four signature colognes - traces its formulations to Colla himself, each recipe passed down and quietly refined through the generations of ownership that followed. Everything is hand-made in Italy by specialists who work in direct contact with the house.
