Borgo delle Tovaglie
The shape is a baroque cartouche - the scrolled, cusped frame that has bordered names and coats of arms in Italian palazzi for centuries. Borgo Delle Tovaglie's Adele puts it around a place setting, stripped to the line that defines it: the outer edge bound in a contrasting colour, and a quieter version of the same shape echoed inside in a line of dotted embroidery. Two frames, no flourishes.
Each mat is hand-cut to the shape, made in heavy Italian linen with the house's stain-resistant treatment, by hand in the Bologna atelier.

About Borgo Delle Tovaglie
The name translates, more or less, as "the village of the tablecloths" - and Borgo Delle Tovaglie has been one for a long time. It was founded as a small linen house in Bologna by the mother of Valentina Muggia, devoted to the kind of fabrics an Italian table is meant to wear. In 2005, Valentina and her husband Giuliano Di Paolo took over. They kept what was working and brought their own eye to the rest - a more eclectic, more interior-minded sensibility, traditional in appearance but unmistakably present.
Everything is still made in the atelier in Bologna, by hand, to order. There is no off-the-shelf collection in the conventional sense. A customer brings a measurement, a room, a colour they have been thinking about; the atelier makes the piece. The work moves with the seasons - a spring-summer collection, an autumn-winter collection, and a small capsule each year for Christmas - but the bespoke service runs underneath all of it.
What Valentina and Giuliano have made of Borgo Delle Tovaglie is a rare thing: a textile house that still works the way a textile house used to work. To order. By hand. In Bologna.
Natural linen Care Guide
Linen is a natural fabric that undergoes multiple washes, dyeing, and drying processes to achieve its signature soft and slightly wrinkled look. To keep it in the best condition, follow these simple care instructions:
- Washing: Hand wash or machine wash at 40°C using regular detergent and minimal fabric softener.
- Stain Removal: For tough stains, pre-treat with Marseille soap or a gentle stain remover for coloured fabrics.
- Drying: Air drying is best. If using a tumble dryer, remove the linen immediately after the cycle ends to prevent deep creases.
- Ironing: Linen can be ironed at high temperatures with steam. For the best results, iron while slightly damp.
