Italian Tablecloths

Every tablecloth here comes from one workshop: Borgo delle Tovaglie, which has hand-made table linen in a Bologna atelier since 2005, run today by Valentina Muggia and Giuliano Di Paolo. We stock them because they treat a tablecloth the way a good tailor treats a jacket - as something cut, finished and edged by hand, meant to be used for decades rather than replaced each season.

The collection runs from the quiet to the theatrical. Bauhaus puts clean geometry in a single saturated colour onto plain linen, after the weaving workshop at the Bauhaus. Sfogliatella layers four sheets of linen gauze into ruffles named for the Neapolitan pastry, finished with a cord-embroidered edge. Riviera is finished with an entredeux - a narrow band of openwork hemstitching between field and border, the detail that gives the cloth its lightness. Ludo and Erica carry the large-scale florals of the chintz tradition, in the lineage of the palampores India sent to Europe in the seventeenth century; Ludo adds a long, knotted fringe in the colours of the cloth. Filo is the plainest of all: a single line of contrasting cord embroidery around the edge.

Most designs come in several sizes, from a square 170 cm cloth for a small table to 350 cm for a long dining table, with matching placemats and napkins in the same lines.
