Stillux: Pair of Wall Sconces, c.1970s

Milan in the 1960s and 1970s was the centre of a particular argument about what modern living should look like. Stillux, a lighting manufacturer working through that period, took a clear position: that good light was a matter of geometry, not decoration. Their pieces - spare metal frames, clean glass, restrained contrast - were made for rooms that trusted the object to do its work without announcement.

This wall sconce is exactly that. A rectangular tube of frosted white glass is suspended from a blackened metal frame in a clean horizontal line. The mounting plate carries exposed cylindrical fittings - a detail that in another register might read as industrial, but here simply reads as honest. Nothing concealed that did not need to be.

When lit, the glass diffuses the light softly against the wall. 

Minor patina to the metal frame, consistent with age. Glass shade intact. Fully rewired to Australian electrical standards.
