Antica Barbieria Colla
Antica Barbieria Colla has been Milan's barbershop since 1904, still run today by the Bompieri family.
Of the four colognes, this one was Franco Bompieri's own. He specified it as a tribute to the past - to a kind of fragrance that belonged to a certain Milanese moment, a certain way of presenting oneself, that he had watched disappear from the market over decades behind the chair.
It opens with sandalwood - soft, a little hushed - then moves through lily of the valley and geranium before settling into musk, vanilla, and petitgrain. Petitgrain is the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree: woody, slightly aromatic, a note that appears in the great classic barbershop colognes and almost nowhere else anymore. The scent is warm and unhurried. It does not fade quickly.

About the barbershop
Antica Barbieria Colla has been on Via Gerolamo Morone in Milan since 1944 - and in the city, without interruption, since 1904. Dino Colla opened the original barbieria near the Duomo that year, modelled on the private gentlemen's clubs of London. The house survived two addresses and a wartime bombing; Francesca Bompieri, whose father Franco ran it from 1975, runs it today. The product line - hair, skin, beard, shaving, and four signature colognes - traces its formulations to Colla himself, each recipe passed down and quietly refined through the generations of ownership that followed. Everything is hand-made in Italy by specialists who work in direct contact with the house.
