Green Tobacco Hard Shaving Soap
Green Tobacco Hard Shaving Soap
Antica Barbieria Colla
Antica Barbieria Colla has been Milan's barbershop since 1904, still run today by the Bompieri family.
The scent here is the point. Green tobacco - extracted from fermented leaves of the plant, not the cured product - is earthy, warm, and complex in the way that raw botanical materials tend to be. It stays present through the entire shave rather than fading in the lather.
Made by the same traditional saponification process as all Antica Barbieria Colla's hard soaps - liquid poured into moulds, solidified over a time that varies with the season and the humidity - the soap softens the beard, protects the skin from the blade, and prevents redness. For sensitive skin too.
What distinguishes it is entirely the fragrance.

Use
Fill a bowl with hot water and let the brush soak for a few minutes to soften the bristles. After this time, take the brush and squeeze it to remove excess water: the bristles must be moist, but not dripping.
Rub the brush into the soap in circular motions until you start getting some foam and apply it to the face by making a series of continuous circular motions so that the foam rises further until it becomes a white, thick and creamy lather.
Alternatively, you can take a fairly abundant flake of soap, place it in the shaving bowl, dip the brush in it and after having carefully wet it apply the product on the face as described above.
Once this is done, proceed with shaving.
About the barbershop
Antica Barbieria Colla has been on Via Gerolamo Morone in Milan since 1944 - and in the city, without interruption, since 1904. Dino Colla opened the original barbieria near the Duomo that year, modelled on the private gentlemen's clubs of London. The house survived two addresses and a wartime bombing; Francesca Bompieri, whose father Franco ran it from 1975, runs it today. The product line - hair, skin, beard, shaving, and four signature colognes - traces its formulations to Colla himself, each recipe passed down and quietly refined through the generations of ownership that followed. Everything is hand-made in Italy by specialists who work in direct contact with the house.
