moroccan-rug-11
Moroccan rug

This contemporary abstract rug was hand-woven in the High Atlas, by an Amazigh woman working on a vertical wooden loom in the Berber knot - the same technique, freed from the inherited diamond grid. The material is undyed sheep wool, left in its natural cream, worked through with wool dyed a saturated cobalt blue.

It is the same order of blue that the French painter Jacques Majorelle patented for the walls of his Marrakech garden in the 1920s, and that Yves Saint Laurent later restored and carried to the rest of the world - a colour Morocco has claimed as its own, though indigo dye moved through these same trade routes centuries before either man arrived. On this rug the blue runs as broken vertical lines, tightening into a dense architectural cluster on one side before opening out, then dropping into solid blocks of colour just above the fringe.

One of a kind. Woven by a single weaver, on a single loom.
