Born in Naples in 1928, he spent the 1950s and '60s as one of the defining photojournalists of la dolce vita - a longtime contributor to Paris Match, a fixture at Cannes, a friend to the people he photographed. He began making furniture in the late 1960s for the simple reason that he could not find what he wanted for his own apartment in Rome. He drew it himself. He had it fabricated. The friends who came over started asking for their own. Within a few years he was producing pieces from a workshop near the Via Veneto for an international jet set - chrome and brass, travertine and lacquer, burl wood and smoked glass; the visual language of a particular Italian glamour. He composed the way a photographer composes: in proportion, in contrast, in the play of light against material. The furniture was the second career. A patinated brass frame carries open shelves of bronzed and clear glass; a double-door cabinet, faced in richly figured burl wood veneer, sits to one side. The doors are push-to-open. The proportions are architectural - the piece reads as much as room divider as storage.
